Liriodendron tulipifera - Tulip Tree

I read awhile ago that the terminal bud of the tulip tree looks like a duck bill.  Ever since, identification of these trees in winter has been simple.

Quite a number of years ago, I scooped up a very small Tulip Tree seedling and brought it home in a styrofoam cup. (Not sure if this was ethical, but did it anyway. Ethics not always a strong point with me.) Since then I have nutured this tree lovingly. When it got to be about two feet tall, I transplanted it to the front yard. It is now about 15 feet tall, maybe more. Fun to watch the buds turn into small leaves each spring.

I can't wait for the buds to burst. Any day!
